I setup the Millright Touch plate to work with OpenBuilds Control. Millright Mega V XL probing with OpenBuilds Control
Hmmm... I have the MillRight Power Route and the same touch plate (except that I drilled mine all the way through from the existing hole that they put in it) and I've used the same settings that you show in the video. However, my probe never touches the plate. It goes to about the center of the plate to measure for Z but then exits downward movement too soon. It then moves to do X and Y but the same thing occurs, it starts to move toward the plate but stops moving before it actually touches the plate at either point. The software on the other hand resets the XYZ points as if the plate had actually been touched. Not that it matters yet since the probe has yet to touch the plate but I have tested continuity manually through the Troubleshooting tab and then touching the plate to the bit and the probe is indicating that it is being touched. I've played with it for several hours now and can't figure out what could be causing this behavior. Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated. Here's the console output which does show that it should be moving up to 25mm for each axis when probing but it's not. Hey Woodfreak, thank you for the reply. Yes, I tried to be very conscientious when I installed CONTROL and believe that I completed every setup step that's possible, including calibration. I've even done a carve since installing it, setting the 0 point the old fashioned way of course, and the carve came out perfectly and seems to measure out exactly as called for in the file (pic included). I'm pretty new to this but wouldn't that indicate that the calibration was done correctly? Also, if it moves the amount that it should, but doesn't come in contact with the touch pad, wouldn't that throw some sort of error instead of indicating that it had actually determined each of the three points?
if the probe moves are not going far enough AND indicating that it made contact then you have EMI or an intermitant contact to DC ground through the spindle. Please read all of this docs:blackbox:faq-emi [OpenBuilds Documentation] First thing I would do is connect a resistor from 5v to the probe pin in the controller. 2200 ohms is about right. Also move the the probe wires away from all other wires, any wire that it must cross should do so at 90 degrees and separated as a far as possible (for the debugging). once you have it working move the wires closer together till it stops working, now you know what the problem is (-: A test for the ground through the spindle is to unplug the spindle and do a probe test. if that succeeds then plug it in and redo the probe. any problems prove that this is the issue.
Thank you! Well, I don't have a resistor on hand so I'm going to have to get one. So, this evening I did the following hoping that the resistor might not be needed. I confirmed that the probe wires do not cross any other wires, in fact, they're not really near any other wires at all. The closest they come is to where they connect to the control box and then they doesn't cross any wires. Next, I unplugged the router/spindle (DeWalt DW618) and then performed a probe. It worked and there was much rejoicing! I then plugged it back in and probed again and it failed. Ok, we're on to something with the router. I unplugged it and probed again. Unfortunately this time it failed. So, at this point it would seem to me that I have a grounding/intermittent grounding issue. So, after reading through this informative post, it looks like I've got some grounding to work on.
Probe wire relocation and additional grounding hasn't shown any signs of improving the situation so a resistor is on order and supposed to arrive Tuesday 7/19. Eliminate alternatives and the solution must be what remains... I hope.
Also consider getting the real deal: docs:xyzprobe:start [OpenBuilds Documentation] with all that built in, and the added features in CONTROL (like Auto probing - only available for our probe, not for custom probes)
Well, I finally got a resistor. I ended up getting a pack of these from Amazon. Negative went to a ground on the board while positive went to the probe connection on the board. Like magic, I finally have a working 3-axis touch plate. That being said, if I didn't already own the touch plate, I certainly would have taken Peter's advice above and would have purchased the OpenBuilds probe. I still might in fact.
