What are the symptoms of a failing driver?

    I built a CNC router and had success with carving multiple 2D cavities by use of Fusion 360. One of the last cavities I did I noticed the -z was deeper than what I specified in the software but it wasn’t to bad.
    I moved on to my next project. Engraving an aluminum control panel. This hasn’t worked out, I’ve been at it for months. I noticed a grinding noise when +z is run. I replaced the nema 17, checked for mechanical friction, and adjusted the G code but my machine is still problematic.
    I’m using a $40 3018 control board I got off EBay wondering if the z driver is the problem. Originally I was amazed by the cheap board. I’m gonna do a deep dive on the wiring tomorrow. Just read a thread here where a loose wire was mentioned to be the culprit for what sounded like a similar issue. At the same time I’m thinking would a Black box be the answer to my woes?

    I think the nema17's may also be part of the problem. Do you know the specs of those motors? It is likely that they are under powered for your application.

    Nema17's are great for 3D printers and laser etchers.
    Nema23's are what you want for a CNC router, especially Z has to move much more weight.

    You can try reducing the acceleration on Z to give it a chance to move without missing steps.

    That’s eye opening thanks. Seems to explain why the 2D carvings worked. After reading your comments I believe Nema23 and OpenBuilds Black Box are the upgrade I need.

    Yes, but be aware that the number after "Nema" defines the mounting plate size. Check out the Nema23 spec (Google it) for the fixing holes spacing.

    Right I’ll have to build new mounting plates for the Nema23 motors. Will also need new couplers to adapt to their larger shafts to the existing 8mm lead screws.

    My question is which size Nema23 should I use? I see there are a few different sizes. I have a 24V 10A power supply and would like to continue to use if possible.

    Just be aware that a bad PSU can cause a lot of issues. It might also affect your warranty (If BlackBox gets damaged by a Surge from that PSU warranty might be void). You might strongly want to consider a 24V Meanwell Power Supply Bundle if not only to protect your warranty, but also to avoid any issues while using the machine. Good clean power makes for a solid base to work from, ensuring all the other components work as well as they have to. A bad PSU can cause surges, EMI issues, undercurrent/undervoltage issues, damage electrical components, etc


    NEMA 23 Stepper Motor is our Go to motor, if you have extreme loads (like a huge spindle) the High Torque motors are an option, but not required NEMA 23 Stepper Motor - High Torque Series

    NEMA 23 Stepper Motor would be a good choice.

    I’ve been using a Baurer 20v Brushless router with 5AH battery as a spindle. Upgrading to a Makita router is something I’d like to eventually do.

    Second the recomendation for the RoutER11 - I'm very pleased with mine. I don't work for Openbuilds by the way - just a satisfied customer.

    I too like the RoutER11. It lets me use any size endmill up to and including 8mm. I really like the 8mm for removing material during the roughing pass of a 3D carve. The 8mm are not commonly found for ER1, but they are available.
